Zaila Avant-garde won the 2021 Scripps National Sp

Zaila Avant-garde won the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee Thursday evening, becoming the first African-American champion in the event's history.

Upon her win, Avant-garde, who is also a talented basketball player, jumped up and down and let out an excited shout as confetti rained down on the stage.

Chaitra Thummala, a 12-year-old from Frisco, Tex., and Bhavana Madini, a 13-year-old from New York City, came in second and third place, respectively. Jody-Anne Maxwell of Jamaica, who won the bee in 1998, was the competition’s first Black champion.

We’re so excited to be able to share pictures of students at GSG’s first Guatemala school, which was funded and built last year and recently opened for in-person learning!

The school in Caserio Sanguijuela has eight teachers serving 140 students in seven grade levels. None of this would be possible without your generous support!

NASA's miniature Mars helicopter Ingenuity achieve

NASA's miniature Mars helicopter Ingenuity achieved the first powered flight on another planet on Monday.

Mimi Aung is the project manager. Under her guidance, engineers demonstrated it is possible to build a lightweight aircraft that could fly in Mars’ thin atmosphere, and then built it.

"It's real," Aung said moments after first data from the helicopter was processed to the applause and cheers of engineers in mission control.

“We can now say that human beings have flown a rotorcraft on another planet," she added.

If sports is a microcosm of society, what are girls supposed to think about the world they’re growing up in when the NCAA provides its top female players with inferior facilities, food, Covid testing, and even social media acknowledgments compared to their male counterparts?

The time for change has long passed. Women and girls deserve better.
